Sweepers have completed a 2 year assessment of the entire 60 miles of river as it flows through Russell County, VA.
The map below shows river health defined as – the ability to maintain its structure (organization) and function (vigor) over time in the face of external stress (resilience). An example of an external stress would be flooding.
Sweepers use GPS units to assess health using the following metrics:
- Bank Erosion
- Bank Cover
- Bank Geometry
- Bank Height
- Bank Cover Invasive Species
Totals for these variables are shown as red, yellow, and green. Red means the river has low resilience to stress. Yellow means moderate resilience. Green means high resilience.
In addition, some in Russell County were interested in a fish habitat survey, also completed during the assessment by the Sweepers as shown below.
In addition, junk and trash locations were identified and are shown below. This is critical information for logistics planning for clean up StreamSweepers and Partners in the area hope to find funds to begin in 2019.
